How to calculate overtime pay

Multiply your normal hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, then by the overtime hours. Time and a half on a £14 hourly rate is £14 × 1.5 = £21 an hour, so 5 hours is £105. Double time is £28 an hour.

Is overtime taxed more?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as the rest of your pay, but it can push part of your income into a higher band for that pay period. PAYE works cumulatively, so one large payslip usually corrects itself over the year. A basic-rate taxpayer keeps about 72% of overtime after 20% tax and 8% NI; above £50,270 a year it is 58%.

Your overtime rights

  • There is no legal right to enhanced overtime rates; they depend on your contract.
  • Your average pay for all hours worked must not fall below the National Minimum Wage (£12.71 an hour for those 21 and over from April 2026).
  • Regular overtime should be included in holiday pay for the first 4 weeks of statutory leave.
  • You cannot be made to work more than 48 hours a week on average unless you opt out.
