How take-home pay is worked out

Your employer deducts income tax and National Insurance through PAYE each payday. Income tax is charged on pay above your personal allowance, after any pension paid by net pay arrangement or salary sacrifice. Employee National Insurance (category A) is 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year and 2% above that. Student loan repayments are 9% of earnings over your plan threshold, and postgraduate loans 6% over £21,000.

Your personal allowance falls by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000, so it disappears completely at £125,140.

Pension contributions and your pay

  • Net pay arrangement: the contribution is taken before tax, so you get relief at your top rate automatically, but you still pay NI on it.
  • Relief at source: the contribution comes from taxed pay and your provider adds 20%. Higher-rate taxpayers claim the extra relief through Self Assessment or by contacting HMRC; the calculator includes it by extending your basic rate band.
  • Salary sacrifice: your salary is reduced, so you save both tax and NI. Try the salary sacrifice calculator to see the saving.
